3 / 5

Adolescence – the new EP from Brighton punks Gnarwolves – is only four tracks long and runs for less than 10 minutes. Depending on how slow you are at reading, you could potentially listen to the entire thing before finishing this review. It’s short, it’s fast and it kicks arse.

Adolescence’s sound leans more towards something more reminiscent of hardcore punk, which is most obvious on the aggressive punch-in-the-face track “Daydreamer”. Longtime fans of the band shouldn’t worry though: the three-piece’s usual skate-punk demeanour is still there. “Blondie” is an unexpected acoustic homage to Blondie’s “Hanging On The Telephone” that slows the EP down momentarily but thankfully doesn’t disrupt its pace.

Admittedly, it’s not as good as the self-titled debut record they released last year, but if you’re coming into it completely unaware of the band then it’s a good jumping on point. It’s the kind of punk rock that if it were released back in the mid-1990s, you’d find it under the banner of either Fat Wreck or Asian Man Records.

Here’s the Top 5 Things you can do while listening to Adolescence:

  1. School a couple of your mates on the Street Fighter II cabinet at your local pub.
  2. Finally nail that skateboard move you’ve been practising for the past week.
  3. Shotgun a six-pack of VB.
  4. Order a pizza off MenuLog.
  5. Eat said entire pizza. You can do it, we believe in you.
